Smarter Multi-Device Testing: QA for an HR App’s Mobile Migration

This case study introduces a multi-device testing project conducted for a long-established, major logistics solutions company operating worldwide, including Japan. The project focused on verifying quality during the migration of a desktop application to a smartphone application.

Client’s Challenges

The client had a widely used HR and payroll desktop application and was developing a smartphone version in response to customer demand.

The migration to a mobile app raised concerns about various bugs, particularly device-dependent issues. Still, the client lacked both the physical devices and the internal expertise needed to conduct thorough multi-device testing. This created significant anxiety around product quality. On top of that, the budget and schedule for quality assurance were tight, meaning the testing had to be completed efficiently within a short timeframe.

It was under these circumstances that the client reached out to SHIFT ASIA, which has a fleet of over 300 test devices and an extensive track record in multi-device testing.

Client’s Requirements

In order to guarantee quality during the migration from desktop to smartphone application, the client presented the following needs and requirements:

  • Ensure testing covers as many devices as possible to prevent device-dependent bugs from occurring
  • Verify not only visual/display issues, but also functional defects
  • Achieve sufficient test coverage within a limited budget and a tight deadline

SHIFT ASIA’s Approach and Results

To deliver comprehensive multi-device testing within the given budget and timeline, SHIFT ASIA carefully selected the optimal set of test devices by considering the primary devices targeted by the app, as well as market device usage rates.

A total of 10 diverse smartphones were used, 5 Android and 5 iOS devices, including not only the latest models but also older models with a significant market share. This approach ensured that even hard-to-detect, device-dependent bugs were thoroughly uncovered.

To meet the tight budget and deadline, SHIFT ASIA designed comprehensive test cases for high-priority screens and features and executed them against the specification documents. For lower-priority screens and features, ad hoc testing was applied in alignment with observed bug trends, providing broad coverage across the application.

By executing tests efficiently, bugs were identified quickly and converted into tickets in SHIFT’s test management tool, “CAT.” Seamless collaboration between SHIFT ASIA’s testing team and the client’s development team enabled timely fixes and retesting, resulting in remarkably rapid quality improvements.

As a result, testing was completed within the scheduled timeframe, covering an even wider scope than originally targeted. All detected defects were resolved, and the smartphone application was successfully released on schedule.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates that thorough quality assurance doesn’t have to come at the cost of time or budget; it simply requires the right strategy and the right partner.

By combining careful device selection, risk-based test prioritization, and real-time collaboration via CAT, SHIFT ASIA delivered coverage that exceeded the client’s expectations despite the constraints they faced. The result wasn’t just a bug-free release, it was a smoother development cycle, a faster path to market, and a client team that could move forward with confidence.

As more enterprises look to extend legacy desktop applications to mobile platforms, the complexity of device fragmentation and compressed timelines will only grow. This case illustrates that with the right multi-device testing approach, those challenges are entirely manageable, and that quality and speed don’t have to be a trade-off.
